SIM vs 10DLC vs toll-free

A plain comparison of SIM, A2P 10DLC, and toll-free messaging so you can choose the right sending method for your outreach.

There are three common ways to send text messages for outreach: from a number on a physical mobile SIM, from a standard 10-digit number registered with A2P 10DLC, or from a verified toll-free number. This guide compares them so you can understand how each works and what each requires.

The three methods at a glance

  • SIM — sending from a number tied to a physical mobile SIM. This is closer to person-to-person texting and is generally suited to lower-volume, conversational outreach. See SIM for a fuller explanation.
  • A2P 10DLC — a standard 10-digit local number registered for application-to-person business messaging, so carriers can identify the sender. See the A2P 10DLC setup guide.
  • Toll-free — a toll-free number (for example, 833 or 844) that has been through toll-free verification.

The right fit depends on your volume, whether you want a local or toll-free presence, and the registration you are willing to complete. The detailed requirements for the registered methods are set by the messaging ecosystem — see the Twilio documentation in Sources.

Where Landing Zone fits

Registered A2P 10DLC is the supported path in Landing Zone. You register your brand and campaign with the carrier registry through Twilio, then enter your Brand ID and Campaign ID in Settings → Trust Center, which tracks your registration status; SMS sending unlocks once your registration is approved.

Landing Zone has no in-app toll-free verification flow today — toll-free verification is handled with your messaging carrier. SIM-based sending is not the path Landing Zone is built around; see SIM for why carriers treat it differently.

How to choose

Questions to guide your choice

Whichever method you choose, the fundamentals are the same: have permission to message your contacts, keep your sender recognizable, and honor opt-outs. No sending method makes a particular message lawful on its own. See Consent and contact permissions and Opt-outs and STOP keywords.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use more than one method?

Many teams use different methods for different kinds of outreach. Choose the method that fits each use case, and complete the right registration or verification for it.

Which method has the least setup?

SIM-based sending generally involves the least registration, but it is usually suited to lower-volume, conversational outreach rather than large campaigns.

Do A2P 10DLC and toll-free have fees?

Twilio and carrier fees may apply to the registered methods. Review current pricing in the Twilio documentation.
